Wickham Lodge is of historical interest
and research is on-going. It is known to be two Tudor Lodges made into
one Georgian House. An archaeologist in medieval history has concluded
that there was a connection with Thomas Bourchier, Archbishop of
Canterbury (and later Cardinal) 1454 - 1486 who married Henry VII and
Elizabeth of York, thus uniting the "red rose and the white rose"
(these roses are planted in the rose walk). Another expert has
concluded that the house was, before that, a Saxon hall house. This
stretch of river is shown on maps as Wickham Reach, and there is
evidence of barge building taking place here. Many original features
still exist. Restoration has been carried out by local craftsmen.
